1965 : The Year It All Started

In 1966 Mr. Roger Kelley, then a vice president of the company, suggested that a random survey be conducted of retirees who had left the company at age 65. The purpose of the survey was to learn from retirees their feelings on the company's pre-retirement counseling, pension and insurance benefits, company publications, and whether or not they would like to form a retirees club.
More than 80% of surveys were returned, most indicated that Caterpillar retirees continued involvement in company activites up to 15 years after their retirement date. A six member steering committee was formed from a pool of thirty company representatives to help build the foundation and objectives for the Caterpillar Retirees Club.
